Male Breast Reduction

Male Breast Reduction – Excess male breast development is called Gynecomastia. This condition may occur in men due to a variety of causes including weight gain or loss, use of certain drugs like hormones or steroids, fatty tumors, genetic predisposition, or hormonal imbalances. In most cases, no cause is found. The incidence of this problem is increasing in the world, perhaps due to the effect of environmental pollutants having a female hormone-like mimic effect.

Very rarely one-sided enlargement may be due to tumor growth. Male breast cancer is very rare but does exist and may present as gynecomastia. Ultrasound and biopsy tests may be needed to resolve this.

Male Breast Reduction Surgery

Gynecomastia correction has undergone a lot of change. In the past, there were external scars. Now, liposuction forms an integral part of surgery and it may be sufficient to solve the problem. If there is a remaining gland, open removal is required through a cut in the areola [scars in this area fade well]. Scars are therefore negligible. Adjacent areas on the sides may also need treatment for Male Breast Reduction.

Side effects:

There may be still sagging due to excess skin that did not shrink. There may be residual gland-like mass, this is due to scar tissue. Dimpling or depression may be due to irregularity in the layer of fat or deep scar.

Complications: complications are rare, collection of blood or serum may happen in early days, depressions, and minor deformities may be seen later. Residual excess skin may be a problem. A small percentage may need revision surgery.

Non-surgical options for Male Breast Reduction

Especially in adolescent age, medical therapy, and follow-up with an endocrinologist (a medical doctor who specializes in hormones) may be appropriate. Some cases of Male Breast Reduction can be treated by medications that oppose female hormones. Diet and exercise with a trained dietician and/or exercise therapist may be helpful. A combination of the above therapies, including psychiatric support, can be beneficial.
