General cause of hair loss
In the majority of cases hair loss is as a result of a genetic pre disposition. The genetic trait is passed down from both sides of the family and not necessarily as you may have been led to believe just from the mothers` side. This trait will effect both men and women. Hair loss can even skip generations and effect one sibling and not the other and in fact, even result in siblings suffering from different types of hair loss. The causes might be different and as a result it is always recommended to seek the opinion of an experienced physician.
Hair loss in men
The main cause of hair loss in men is a condition known as “Androgentic Alopecia” or “Male Pattern Baldness”. The pattern of this type of hair loss is where hair will recede from the lateral sides of the forehead (hair line) and or from the crown (vertex). Eventually the receding hair line will meet the thinning crown leaving a horseshoe shaped ring around the back and sides of the head.
Baldness is caused when genetically sensitive follicles are eroded by the hormone “Dihydrotestosterone” or DHT. The fore mentioned hormone cause healthy hair follicles to miniaturize over a period of time until such time that you are left with the “horse shoe “effect.
However, in the majority of cases the follicles at the back of the head that sit just above the occipital bone in a band from ear to ear are genetically not effected by the DHT and last for a life time. This is the basis of hair transplantation whereby permanent hair follicles are taken from the sides and back of the head and transplanted to the affected areas.
Male Baldness: The Norwood Scale
Class 1 represents a normal head of hair with no visible hair loss.
Class 2 is characterized by the beginning of a receding hairline and a “widow’s peak” on the forehead.
Class 3 patients exhibit a more significant decline in hair above the temples as well as receding from the forehead. In Class 3 Vertex, hair loss is starting to become significant on the crown.
Class 4 hair loss may become more noticeable on the crown or patients may have significant hair loss above the temples and/or front anterior areas.
Class 5 hair loss approaches significant levels with most hair loss occurring on the top of the vertex and crown. Hair transplantation for this Class and higher Class levels may require more grafts to provide coverage and density.
Class 6 patients show major hair loss, but still have areas with donor hair available. Transplanting this hair can still have excellent results.

Hair Loss in Women
In women more often than in men, hair loss may be due to conditions other than female pattern hair loss. These can include

- Dietary deficiencies
- Dermatologic conditions
- Medications e.g. anti cancer drugs
- Hair styling and chemical hair processing
In order to effectively treat your hair loss, it is important to accurately identify the cause of hair loss or thinning. The following series of blood tests, which may be arranged by your treating physician, will help to identify the possible cause of your hair loss;
- FBC – Full blood count
- Se Ferritin
- TSH – Thyroid Stimulating Hormone
- BSL – Blood Sugar Level
- FSH – Follicle Stimulating Hormone
- E2 – Estradiol
- Vitamin D
For normal hair health, Se Ferritin levels should be 70 or higher. If your blood tests exhibit a Se Ferritin reading of below 70, supplementation may be required.
