Prostate enlargement, medically known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is one of the most common prostate conditions in men as they get older. The word benign is important: BPH is not prostate cancer and does not increase cancer risk.
Prostate growth can begin after age 40, and more than 90 percent of men above 80 may have some degree of enlargement. As the prostate grows, it can press on the urethra and make urination more difficult, though the exact age and rate of growth varies from person to person.
Not every enlarged prostate needs surgery. Treatment depends on symptom severity, examination findings, and how the condition responds to monitoring or medication.
When symptoms are mild, periodic monitoring or medication to ease flow may be enough. Not every patient needs a procedure.
Rezum is a minimally invasive option that uses water vapor to treat enlarged prostate tissue, considered for select patients whose symptoms are not adequately controlled by medication.
For more significant obstruction, options such as TURP, laser surgery, or other surgical approaches may be discussed, depending on prostate size and severity.
Evaluation may include a detailed symptom history, physical examination, urine testing, PSA blood testing, ultrasound, urine flow assessment, and measurement of urine remaining in the bladder after urination. The exact workup is selected based on your age, symptoms, and clinical risk factors.
BPH is usually not dangerous on its own, but it can seriously affect quality of life and sleep. Treatment becomes more important when a patient cannot urinate, when blood appears in the urine, when bladder stones occur, when infections recur, or when kidney function is affected.
Dr Amin evaluates BPH severity through detailed symptom review and examination, guiding patients toward monitoring, medication, Rezum, or surgical options as appropriate.
