Cheek Augmentation

Cheeks may be enhanced by fillers (temporary), fat grafting (longer lasting) or by implants (permanent). Fillers are easy to use, done as office procedure and offer soft subtle enhancement; the effect can last 9 months to 1 year. However, each syringe of filler contains only 1 ml of filler gel, for a good impact, 4 to 6 ml may be needed. Fat grafting is a bigger procedure, involves taking some fat from another area by mini Liposuction under local anesthesia and injection of this fat into the cheek by specific technique. There is no limitation on the amount of fat that we can take from the donor area. A part of the volume is lost over 4 months, the remaining amount stays for several years. In addition, this is living tissue and offers some benefits in terms of rejuvenating the area, improving skin glow and circulation. Finally the implants are plastic materials made of silicone or polyethylene and are inserted deep in the cheek through a small cut inside the mouth. There is a small risk of infection and displacement, however, once settled they are permanent.

So there is good choice in this area and the doctor and patient can together choose what is best for a given situation. Fat graft can be done for superficial layers while implant can augment the deep part; this type of composite augmentation is also available.
