Otoplasty (Ear Reshaping)

Otoplasty (ear reshaping) is designed to correct protruding or disfigured ears in healthy children and adults. The goal is to create a natural shape for the ears and to align them at the right angle with respect to the face/head.

Ears may be mis-shapen or may stick out prominently; this is seen from birth. Although not of functional consequence for hearing, the ears attract criticism and comment especially in school age. Such kids get psychological issues due to bullying. Even without this, the prominent ears do not look pleasing. Otoplasty offers correction.

This surgery is best done in pre-school age when the cartilages are soft and can be molded easily. However, it is still possible to do this in later age till middle age. Older individuals may have very stiff cartilages and this surgery is usually not done then.
Surgery: Incisions are made on the back of the ear, some cartilage is removed if necessary, the remaining cartilage is bent into the correct shape and retained by internal permanent sutures. The skin is then closed with drainage. There will be a bandage around the head for 5 days. The child must wear a head cap for 3 weeks to help stabilize and protect the repair. Activity is reduced for the first 2 weeks.

Contact sports and helmet use are discouraged for 6-8 weeks.

Other options

Ear molding and taping the ears of infants may be effective. If done, this is only effective during the first months following childbirth and must be undertaken under the direction of your pediatrician and surgeon.
