The Fue & Fut Method

Human hair grows in packets of hair called grafts containing 1 to 4 hair per graft. There are two methods of extracting these grafts. The F.U.E method (follicular unit extraction) or F.U.T (follicular unit transplant).

F.U.E. is performed with a specialized punch-like surgical device that extracts one graft unit at a time. FUE does not leave a linear scar, but does leave tiny scars at each puncture point. These scars are not easy to see. Our experience with FUE also shows that the successful growth rate is lower than the FUT method. Thousands of punctures are performed over a wide area to extract the required number of grafts.

F.U.T. is more aptly known as the “Strip Excision” technique and is accomplished by removing a strip that contains hundreds or thousands of hair grafts from the donor area. A small scar will be left where the strip was removed.
Advanced techniques (trichophytic closure) ensure the scar is minimal, and proper planning ensures it is not visible. After the strip is removed, it is further processed and individual grafts are excised under a microscope in preparation for transplant.

The benefits and pitfalls of each method are passionately debated on the Hair Transplant forums, and we encourage you to find out as much as possible about both methods.

Our senior hair transplant physicians have been at the forefront of research and development of the FUT/Strip method and have been refining the procedure for almost 30 years concluding that the Strip method yields more grafts in a single session and that the grafts grow more consistently. The Strip method also makes it possible to perform “The Optimal Density Technique” (link to the page of this service) which can reduce the number of surgeries required to attain the desired results with significant density and coverage produced in one surgery over one day.

Our Australian team of hair transplant physicians have developed the “Optimal Density Technique” (link to the page of this service) which is a highly specialized method of planting the transplanted hair grafts. They use this method to create natural-looking hairlines and to restore as much natural density as possible.

The success of hair transplant surgery is greatly dependent on the quality, volume and density of your donor hair.
